ACT Log Book Competencies – Driving School Canberra
When you start learning to drive in Canberra, you’ll receive a Log Book and the “Towards your P’s” booklet. These resources help you track your progress and understand what’s required to get your provisional license. The Log Book has 23 tasks (called competencies) and 2 review points that you need to complete to meet the ACT Government standards. These tasks can be completed through Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) or a one-off test.
The “Towards your P’s” booklet is very helpful, providing detailed notes on each competency. Here’s a summary of the Log Book competencies:
Log Book Competencies
- Understanding the Controls: Know how to use all the car controls.
- Cabin Drill: Set up your car correctly before driving.
- Starting Up Procedure: Properly start the car.
- Moving Off Procedure: Start driving smoothly.
- Gear Operation: Change gears correctly and smoothly.
- Steering Control: Steer the car properly.
- Turns: Make left and right turns correctly.

How Many Lessons to Complete the Log Book?
The number of lessons needed varies for each learner. It depends on your learning pace and the quality of practice you get between lessons. On average, it takes 10 to 15 lessons to complete the Log Book, but it can be done in as few as 7 lessons with good practice.
ACT Log Book vs. One-Off Test
Both methods have their advantages:
- CBT&A (Log Book Method): This is great for structured and progressive skills development. It’s especially good for mature learners who benefit from gradual learning.
- One-Off Government Test: This is suitable for confident learners who get quality practice and guidance. It’s often the best choice for international license holders.
Regardless of the method you choose, bring your Official ACT Log Book to each lesson. The Log Book can be completed even if you attempt and don’t pass the one-off test.
Key Points
- We offer both the CBT&A method and training for the one-off test.
- The required standards are the same for both methods.
- The methods are not exclusive; you can use the Log Book method and still attempt the one-off test.
- The Log Book method includes 23 competencies and 2 reviews.
- An instructor cannot teach and assess the same competency in a single lesson.
- A review lesson can’t happen until 36 hours after completing the final competency in that review.
- The final drive needs to be scheduled with the regulator at least one public service working day in advance.
